I kept Devdas Movie with me for 8 months but didn't watch it because of all the negative publicity on board. Then I took the plunge.
First of all I want to say that I was not a big fan of Sharat Chandra. His stories (except Swami) mostly portrayed women as weak-minded, subservient (perhaps true for the time, but not worthy of praise), and men as weak and mostly well-educated but well-meaning. Not educated from I had no real recollection of the story I wrote.
And, not being a huge Dilip Kumar fan, I never watched the old version. So, I have no comparison to draw, no plot line difference to speak of.
I was moved by the tragic love story that unfolded. It wasn't flawless, most Bollywood movies aren't.
Negatives - The sets were beautiful but on top of that, the same went for the costumes. The duet dance was a great way to compare Ash vs Madhuri dancing skills (both were pretty matched for me) but in the story line it was pretty silly and shouldn't have happened.
There was no real need for the two to meet, but it was Mr. Bhansali's directorial license. Chandramukhi's kotha and atmosphere were directly lifted from Pakeezah, which was a very stylized film and not authentic.
Positives: Shah Rukh Khan gave a very restrained performance, silent tears accompanied by an anguish that only his eyes were featured in, a real departure from the poor crying face. He was very good at drunk, very good at suffering.
It is remarkable how much this actor is accused of being typecast when every other year he delivers a wonderful performance – Dil Se (1998), Ashoka (2001) and Devdas Movie (2002) all a departure from his usual typecast romantic hero image. We do. Recent roles in Swades and KANK have been even more varied.
Cynics will keep saying that she overacted, or that she didn't portray any emotion, for me it was a really great role as a suffering lover. Mr. Khan - Your Best Actor Award was well deserved for this role in Devdas Full Movie.
Madhuri - What can one say about this great personality? She was amazing, you felt her pain, her care, her selfless love, the moments between her and SRK. And his dance was amazing.
Ash - Sometimes a little woody, but not always. She had a chemistry with Shah Rukh that was understated until she was out of his reach, but come on - the woman looks amazing, there's any doubt a hundred Devdas Film types are dying for her?? She was better as the film progressed into the more serious parts.
The film hit an emotional low about a third of the way through and I sat there and cried for these tortured souls for almost two hours.
The film was eye candy in the set and costume department. The two lead actresses were stunning, Shah Rukh had an easy look, yet there was something that detracted from this one great film. After much thought I have come to the conclusion that it was the sheer beauty of everything that actually made everything a little unreal to me.
How can such perfect people have such an imperfect life? In short the small black mark on the lips was missing and it left me a little dissatisfied.
If Mr. Bhansali had said that this was an adaptation from the original novel, people would forgive him for the fact that Devdas Film in his version is a mature man and knows his mind (though fails to act decisively on it). lives), and the fact that a noble lady visits a prostitute's establishment and the two dance together.
If you don't compare it with what happened or didn't happen before, it was an intensely emotional experience, fueled by stellar performances from Shah Rukh, Madhuri and yes, even Aish.
The film is based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel 'Devdas Movie'. Sanjay Leela Bhansali completely changed parts of the novel to suit the film.
The film continues to fall down until the end. It is a perfect anticlimax film.
Brief Story: The early part of the first half of the film shows the immense relationship between childhood companions Devdas Movie (Shah Rukh Khan) and Paro (Aishwarya Rai) and the reactions of all the other characters.
The separation of these 2 lovers shows the second half effect of separation which leads Devdas to the stunning courtesan Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit). Devdas Full Movie drowns himself in excessive alcohol in an attempt to get Paro out of his mind and prevents Chandramukhi from entering his mind.
At last Devdas himself drinks. To death, to lose both women. (Whom he could never stop loving and whom he could never love again).
After silencing the critics with "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", Mr Bhansali made his second debut in "Devdas Film" translating the glitz and glam on the silver screen to the extent the audience demanded a pair of sunglasses. Of. Critics have lashed out at Bhansali a lot on this issue, so I must humbly bow out on this front.
Bhansali takes Sharat Chandra's novel and adds his own sensibilities. Not too much deviation from the original but definitely taking creative liberties. A practical and sensible adaptation to commercial leverage.
SRK:: There was no doubt about this role was destined for SRK. After KL Saigal and Dilip Kumar, if any actor in the current generation can fit the bill, it is undoubtedly Shah Rukh Khan.
The intensity in his eyes was quite apt for "Devdas Movie" and needless to say, his signature style dialogue delivery (read hamming) was effectively used by Bhansali to bring life to "Devdas".
Aishwarya: No doubt only Bhansali who presented "Miss World 1994" can actually deliver the goods (reference Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam). She was seen as Paro in "Devdas Movie".
Madhuri :: I felt that Bhansali's Chandramukhi didn't integrate naturally with the main story. The character is presented in a different light by Bhansali. Mrs Nene was ideally suited for the role.
Kirron Kher: Spot on although I have to admit that her character was a bit over-the-top. On second thought, it would have been nothing short of a coup if Bhansali had Rekha to see all three lovely ladies under one roof instead.
Jackie Shroff: Motilal made a mark as Chunni Babu in Bimol Roy's version. Sadly, Jackie Shroff's chunni babu gets blown away.
His lack of homework is clearly visible. Perhaps Govinda could have been a better choice.
The songs were very melodious. Bhansali-Ismail Darbar were a winning combination and there is no doubt about it. Sadly, they parted ways after this project.
It is clear from the opening credits sequence itself that this is not your typical Bollywood film. There are no iffy dance scenes with multiple costume changes.
The location inexplicably doesn't change during those dance sequences—thus no confused Swiss folk staring at the actors in amusement in the background. The dance sequences in Devdas Movie are sexy without being sloppy. They are grand but not gaudy.
Women don't like (could pair badly) western fashion with pleated miniskirts and glitter tops. Men, thank god, don't wear tight PVC muscle tops and leather trousers (this may be all the rage in India, but it's a big non everywhere). The fashion in Devdas Film, likely historically inaccurate, is surprising nonetheless.
The obligatory fight sequence where our hero sweats over a dozen armed 'mustache bad guys' is notably absent. Not even a goofy comedy sidekick.
Overall, it's hard for me to categorize Devdas Movie as a 'Bollywood film' - it's just too good.
It has flaws, the main one being that you don't get a clear idea of how much time has passed between the events in the movie. Anyway, I am looking forward to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next film.
